Then and Now
Mary Jeanne Packer founded Battenkill Fibers Carding & Spinning Mill in 2009 to provide value-added, custom carding and spinning services for fiber farms and makers; and to manufacture yarn and fiber products for wholesale and retail markets. The mill produces 100-150 lbs of artisan quality natural-colored and dyed semi-worsted yarn daily using refurbished traditional milling machinery.
Since its founding, Battenkill Fibers has grown to provide 18 full-time and part-time jobs; and was recognized as Washington County Small Business of the Year in 2015.
Battenkill Fibers is committed to our customers and to our community. We pay a fair price for fibers sourced from family-owned farms. We insure equitable evaluation of fiber quality. We offer diverse employment opportunities. We make environmentally responsible choices in all aspects of our procurement, processing and distribution.
We embrace and respect the nature, history and culture of our place on the land in the Hudson Valley; and strive to sustain this rural heritage for future generations. We furnish access to local processing for farmers, unique materials for hand crafters, and authentic experiences for visitors to the region and school groups.
Our goal is to make premium quality yarn - yarn that works up into smooth, long-wearing products. Our yarn is lofty with well-balanced twist, creating crisp stitch definition in knitted fabrics. At Battenkill Fibers, farmers who bring us fleeces always get their own fiber back, regardless of size of order. After all of your hard work caring for your animals, having them sheared properly, sorting out the best fibers, and storing and delivering your fleeces to a mill – you want to know for sure that the yarn or roving returned to you is yours!
